On 10 December 2020, the European Parliament Interest Group on Allergy & Asthma and the European Allergy & Asthma Youth Parliament will launch its recommendations "Growing up with Allergy and Asthma - How EU policymakers can support young allergy and asthma patients live better lives".
The digital launch will be hosted by MEPs Sirpa Pietikainen (EPP/Finland) and Tilly Metz (Greens/Luxembourg) Chair and Vice-Chair of the European Parliament Interest Group on Allergy and Asthma. MEP Juozas Olekas (S&D/Lithuania) will participate in roundtable. The event is a unique opportunity for young people who live with allergies and asthma to have a direct conversation with policymakers and scientific advisors to place the young patients voice at the centre of decisions affecting their health.
The “Growing up with Allergy and Asthma" recommendations outline what needs to be done at EU level to turn youth recommendations into reality. It offers a holistic approach to healthcare initiatives, that explores how young people can be actively involved in policy decisions impacting their health, to create healthy environments for everyone to enjoy a good Quality of Life. The recommendations also examine how digital tools can be used in healthcare to help patients and medical professionals in better prevention, treatment, and care.
The launch will also feature a panel discussion to have an in-depth conversation around key EU policy topics including the EU Pharmaceutical Strategy and European Green Deal, and what these strategies will mean for young people with allergy and asthma. Speakers will also talk about the transition from paediatric to adult healthcare.
The speakers include Prof. Nikos Papadopoulos, Senior scientific advisor; Prof. Ioana Agache, EAACI former president; Dr. Carmen Riggioni, EAACI Junior Members Assembly Chair, and Mikaela Odemyr, President of EFA.
Finally, MEP Juozas Olekas (S&D, Lithuania), Vice-Chair of the Interest Group, will join a roundtable discussion to talk with young patients about challenges and opportunities for policymakers and patients in asthma and allergy healthcare.
